Golfer Moses Kahalekulu's Diary of Trip To Hawaii
Feb. 17, 2006
From 11/7/05 to 11/9/05 the USF men's golf team played in Kaneohe, HI in the Hawaii Fall Intercollegiate.
The travel team consisted of players: Domingo Jojola, Kurt Nino, Moses Kahalekulu, Jesse Galvon, and Taylor Hobin.
The team competed against 19 different teams and in a field totaling 108 players. The tournament was held at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course, which was located on the Kaneohe Bay military facility. The course itself was beautifully located along the Oceanside, however its beauty didn't mask its tricky nature.
The course proved to be very narrow with undulated greens at lightning fast speeds. Players were faced with the challenge of keeping their ball in bounds, correctly gauging the speeds and slopes of the difficult greens, and all while trying to ignore the magnificent surf with perfect conditions.
The weather also played a key role in the tournament with wind and rain coming off and on repeatedly. At one point players were forced to seek shelter as a massive downpour proceeded to drench any poor sole without an umbrella to hide under.
Coach Gary Nelson and assistant coach Ben Douglas accompanied the players to assist in dealing with the conditions of the tricky conditions. In the end the team didn't play up to expectations coming in 14th place totaling 925, however enjoyed ever bit of the sunny weather, sandy beaches, and mellow people of Hawaii. All the players left the tournaments with hopes of returning to finish better the next year.
