Chris Cunningham Named 2009 Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar
July 22, 2009
(Norman, OK) - USF junior Chris Cunningham was one of 108 NCAA Division I men's golfers to be named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America. A 2009 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team selection, Cunningham is the second Don to capture All-American honors in the last two seasons after senior Kurt Nino was named to the list in 2008.
A business major, Cunningham posted a 3.21 GPA in 2008-09 and was named to the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll for the third consecutive year. In addition the San Diego native was named to the WCC Spring All-Academic Team for the second time.
Cunningham turned in a strong junior campaign for USF, helping the Dons capture the 2009 WCC Championship, the first for the team since 1990 and advance to the NCAA Regionals for the second time in school history and first since 1991. His eagle on No. 18 in the final round of the WCC Championship at Hiddenbrooke helped secure USF's 10th league title.
An honorable mention All-WCC selection in 2009, Cunningham posted a third place showing at the 2008 Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills, carding a 2-under 211. For the season, Cunningham ranked third on the team in stroke average at 73.49. With 11 rounds at par or better during the 2008-09 campaign, Cunningham ranks tied for fourth in USF single-season history dating to 1993.
