USF Men's Golf Recognized for Academic Accomplishments
Sept. 1, 2009
NORMAN, Okla. - USF men's golf achieved excellence on the course last season capturing the 2009 West Coast Conference Championship and advanced to NCAA Regional play for the second time in school history. Tuesday, the Dons were recognized for their academic achievement and were named to the Golf Coaches Association of America All-Academic Team for 2009.
USF was one of just two teams recognized for team academic success, joining Gonzaga. The Dons were led by junior Chris Cunningham, who was named to the Cleveland Golf Academic All-American Scholar list in July.
"This is a singular honor, especially so because of the performance of our team on the course this last season," USF head coach Dr. Gary Nelson said. "When a team takes Academic Honors and Athletic Honors in the same season it is truly a remarkable achievement. What goes unmentioned is that all but one of our players are Business Majors - one of the most difficult courses of studies at USF. We have produced Academic-All Americans in each of the last three years."
East Tennessee State (Division I), St. Mary's of Texas (Division II), Gustavus Adolphus (Division III), Savannah College of Art and Design (NAIA), McLennan CC (NJCAA DI) and Tyler JC (NJCAA DII) have been named Academic National Champions for their respective divisions announced the GCAA. East Tennessee State posted the highest recorded team GPA with 3.78. A total of 82 teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher and earned All-Academic Team recognition.
"I am so delighted for our team to receive the inaugural Academic National Champion Award from the GCAA for the highest team GPA in Division I Men's Golf," said East Tennessee State Head Coach Fred Warren. "Our players take their classwork seriously, and certainly exemplify the "student" part of being an NCAA student-athlete. I am proud of our young men not only for their hard work and dedication to their academic responsibilities, but also for their time-management skills. This award means a lot to our team, and we are honored to be this year's recipient."
Belmont, Detroit Mercy, East Carolina, East Tennessee State, Georgia Tech, Gustavus Adolphus, Ohio Dominican, Rice, SCAD, Seton Hall and St. Mary's (Texas) were also accorded President's Special Recognition status for earning team GPAs of 3.50 or better.
To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college of university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
