ABOUT USF MEN'S GOLF: USF men's golf is a program on the rise and captured its 10th West Coast Conference title in program history April 14 in the WCC Championship at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. With the victory, the Dons also qualified for their first Regional trip since making their inaugural berth in 1991. In three seasons, head coach Dr. Gary Nelson has transformed the USF program and guided the Dons to a pair of 2008-09 tournament victories - the Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills and the WCC Championship. For his efforts, Nelson captured WCC Coach of the Year accolades.
A long established program, past USF head coaches have included two Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame coaches - Pete Newell and Phil Woolpert. The Dons burst into national prominence in 1991. Led by All-American and future PGA player Todd Fischer, San Francisco secured the first NCAA Regional appearance in program history. Fischer finished his senior campaign ranked second nationally in stroke average behind Arizona State's Phil Mickelson.
