USF Men's Golf Set to Compete in 2009 Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic

(San Francisco) - USF men's golf team heads to South Bend, IN this week to compete in the 2009 Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic beginning Monday, October 5 at the Warren Golf Course, a par-70 course playing at 7,023 yards. The Dons enter their second event of the Fall season after posting a third place showing at the Michigan State Spartan Classic.
TOURNAMENT FIELD: The Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic features a 15-team field, including: defending tournament champion No. 20 Arkansas, No. 23 BYU, Cincinnati, Colorado, Georgetown, Houston, No. 32 Iowa, Lamar, Miami (OH), Missouri, Notre Dame), Ohio State, San Francisco, Saint Mary's (CA) and UT-Arlington. TOURNAMENT FORMAT: Each team's lineup will be comprised of five golfers with the lowest four scores for each round counting towards the overall team score. The tournament will span two days (Monday-Tuesday, October 5-6) with the first 36 holes being played on Monday and the final 18 holes coming on Tuesday. The opening round on Monday will consist of a shotgun start at 9 a.m. with continuous play for round two following the conclusion of round one. The final round will be made up of split-tee stars from #1/#10 beginning at 8:15 a.m.
LAST TIME FOR THE DONS AT THE FIGHTING IRISH: USF finished 10th in the 2008 event. Domingo Jojola was the top finisher for the Dons in a share of 20th place.
RESULTS: Live hole-by-hole scoring of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic will be available through Golfstat.com and can be accessed under the events menu of USFDons.com. Daily caps and standings will also be posted on USFDons.com.
THE LAST TIME OUT: USF posted a third place showing at the 2009 Michigan State Spartan Invitational. Senior Domingo Jojola was the top Don with an even par 213 (73, 69, 71). Senior Chris Cunningham posted a 14th place showing with a 2-over 215 (67, 73, 75), while sophomore Ji Hwan Park also finished in the top-25 at 219 (75, 75, 69) and carded the Dons low round on the final 18 at 2-under.
NEXT UP: San Francisco competes in the 2009 Alistair MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by Cal, beginning Monday, October 12 at the Meadow Club.
