17th Ranked USF Tops Stanford 2-0 to Win WCC/Pac 10 Challenge

Aug. 27, 2006

Final Stats

Junior College All-American Ardalan Attar scored in the first half and junior Adam Bergman scored in the second half to pace 17th ranked USF to a 2-0 victory over Stanford Sunday night at Negoesco Stadium in the WCC/Pac-10 Challenge.

The Dons (2-0) , playing their first home game of the season, took the lead on a combination started by senior Matt Languis. Languis looped a free kick into the penalty box where Bergman headed the ball to Attar who scored from close range at 32:28.

The Dons, who play at San Jose State Sunday, scored the insurance goal at 79:51 when Aaron Chandler passed the ball to a streaking Bergman who beat Stanford goalkeeper John Moore in a one-on-one situation.

USF won the Bay Area Challenge with a 2-0 mark, with wins over Cal and Stanford. Santa Clara was 1-0-1 after tying California Sunday night.

USF goalkeeper Geremy Uhl recorded his 20th career shutout and second in two games this season, making just one save.

Stanford, dropped to 0-2 on the year, after opening the WCC/Pac 10 Challenge losing to Santa Clara on a Broncos' penalty kick, 1-0.

"I thought we played a real solid game," said two-time defending WCC Coach of the Year Erik Visser. "Stanford has a solid defense but we used patience to score our two goals. Our defense has been really good over the first two games, led by goalkeeper Geremy Uhl."

USF plays six straight games on the road starting Sunday at San Jose State. The Dons then visit nationally ranked Penn State's tournament and play at Cal State Northridge and UCLA before opening WCC play at St. Mary's. They return home to face Santa Clara on September 27th.
