Late Aaron Chandler Goal Gives #8 USF Win at Cal State Northridge, Dons at UCLA Sunday
Aaron Chandler scored with just under four minutes left in regulation to give eighth ranked USF a 2-1 win over Cal State Northridge, ruining the Matadors' home opener.USF (5-0-1) got on the board first when Ardalan Attar scored with just 12 seconds remaining in the first half, blasting a low shot just inside the right post.
The Dons, who allowed a late goal in their last contest to allow Ohio State a tie, again gave up a goal in the 80th minute, this time scored by former St. Mary's forward Michael Clegg. Clegg's goal was just the second allowed by the Dons this season. He picked up a loose ball in the box to tie the contest.
But Aaron Chandler, USF's leading scorer over the past three seasons, would not be denied, scoring his twelfth career game-winning goal. The play was set up by Daniel DeGeer, who found newcomer Conor Chinn streaking up the field. Chinn dribbled down the field where his cross found Chandler open in front of the goal for the gamewinner at 86:07.
"This was a quality win for our team," said Dons head coach Erik Visser. "Northridge is an excellent team that went to the sweet sixteen last year and was ranked nationally to start the season. I am proud of our guys, who have responded to the challenge of playing five of their first six away from home, in difficult venues. And it gets no easier Sunday when we play at UCLA."
The Dons still have two more road games before they return home to face Santa Clara on Sunday night, September 24. They play at UCLA Sunday afternoon and then open WCC play at St. Mary's a week from today.
