USF Men's Soccer Deadlocks UNLV 1-1 in BMW/Nike Soccer Challenge

Sept. 19, 2008

Final Stats

(San Francisco) - USF men's soccer took on UNLV for the first time in more than 20 years on a foggy Friday night at Negoesco Stadium in the 2008 BMW/Nike Soccer Challenge and the contest finished in a 1-1 deadlock. The Dons (0-4-1) controlled play throughout most of the contest but settled for the tie against the Rebels (4-2-1).

USF junior forward Conor Chinn scored his first goal of the season at 85:28 to force overtime. The Dons leading scorer a year ago, Chinn tallied his 11th scoring strike for USF and the first for the team in 2008.

San Francisco needed Chinn's equalizer after UNLV's Lamar Neagle struck for his third goal of the season at the 49:26 mark of a volley into the upper right corner. Incredibly, it was the first shot of the game for the Rebels who did not manage a single attempt in the opening 45 minutes.

USF held a convincing 18-5 shot advantage, including a 5-0 lead in the first half and a 7-1 margin in the two extra sessions. Chinn led the way with six shots, junior midfielder Leon Williams added three, while sophomore defender Victor Cortez and sophomore forward Bryan Burke each added a pair.

Senior USF goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe (0-2-1) made one save on five shots, while UNLV keeper Hawk Mummey (4-2-1) made four stops in 110:00.

USF returns to BMW/Nike Soccer Challenge action when it takes on perennial national power Penn State Sunday at noon at Negoesco Stadium, immediately followed by the tournament finale when Saint Mary's takes on UNLV.

Penn State 0, Saint Mary's 0 - Game One, 2008 BMW/Nike Soccer Challenge: For the second straight game, 110 minutes of play was not enough to allow for a decision for the Penn State men's soccer team (2-3-2), as it tied Saint Mary's College (1-4-2), 0-0, on Friday evening at Negoesco Stadium on the University of San Francisco campus in a day one match-up of the BMW/Nike Soccer Challenge.
