USF Men's Soccer Downs San Jose State 2-1 in Double Overtime

Sept. 25, 2009

Final Stats

(San Francisco) - USF men's soccer scored two unanswered goals to take a double overtime victory against San Jose State on a chilly and foggy night at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (3-3-0) avenged a double overtime loss last season in the South Bay to the Spartans (2-6-0) and have now won five of the last six against their ancient Bay Area rivals.

San Francisco started the match without the services of three 2008 all-league selections, co-captain starters - Jonathan Levi, Leon Williams and junior Bryan Burke - and lost a fourth, freshman forward Oscar Englund, midway through the first half.

"In overtime, the team showed the mentality of winning," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "Last game (Stanford) we lost in overtime. With four starters out, three of them captains, we showed a lot of toughness and guts. It was not pretty, but the team battled. After being down 1-0, we scored twice to get the win and that's a good sign."

Trailing 1-0 on a goal by Josh Boemecke in the 73rd minute, senior All-American Conor Chinn provided the equalizer for the Dons in the 85th minute on a header to the far post off a feed from junior midfielder Justin Warren. It was the 20th goal for Chinn in his last 23 matches.

Warren, who collected his first collegiate point on Chinn's goal provided the game-winner in the 109th minute off a brilliant cross from sophomore defender Adam Nowack. Warren completed the night with three points on two shots, one on frame. It was the first career point for Nowack.

San Jose State held a modest 12-10 shot advantage, including a 2-1 edge in the extra periods. Chinn led the way offensively with a match-high four shots, three on target, while Cabrera and Warren each added a pair. Colby Moore and Boemecke both fired three shots, two on frame, for SJSU.

Jonathan Lester (2-4-0) suffered the loss for the Spartans. Freshman keeper Brendan Roslund (2-2-0) earned the win for the Dons on a busy night, collecting a career-high six saves.

USF closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule Sunday against Brown. Match time against the Bears is set for 2:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium.
