USF Men's Soccer Shutout 1-0 in San Diego
Oct. 4, 2009
(San Diego) - USF dropped a 1-0 decision at San Diego Sunday in West Coast Conference action at Torero Stadium. The Dons (3-5-1, 0-2-0 WCC) sputtered offensively and managed just one shot against the Toreros (5-3-0, 1-0-0 WCC), who were idle Friday in preparation for their league opener.
San Diego held a 14-1 shot advantage and finally capitalized in the 76th minute as Patrick Wallen took a chip in the box from Ryan Peterman for the only tally of the contest.
"Obviously we are disappointed with the results this weekend, but I'm more disappointed with the lack of urgency within the team," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "This team has shown the ability in the past to be blue collar and take initiative and we are struggling in both areas right now. We must bounce back Friday with a quality performance against a solid team and we must rediscover what kind of character we have as a team."
Freshman goalkeeper Brendan Roslund suffered the loss for the Dons on a busy match and made three saves in the contest. Kelin Briones earned the uneventful shutout for the Toreros and did not make a save.
USF spent much of the opening weekend trying to integrate four key contributors to the lineup - junior forward Bryan Burke, senior midfielders Jonathan Levi and Leon Williams and senior defender Justin Kendro. All four missed at least four matches for the Dons, while Kendro saw his first action of 2009 at Loyola Marymount on Friday and scored his first career goal.
San Francisco looks to bounce back at home when it hosts ancient Bay Area and WCC rival Santa Clara Friday, October 9. Match time against the Broncos is set for 7:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium.
