Final Stats

(Moraga, CA) - USF men's soccer concluded the second week of West Coast Conference play with a tough 1-0 overtime loss at Saint Mary's Sunday afternoon. The Dons (4-6-1, 1-3-0 WCC) could not capitalize on its chances and the Gaels (6-1-3, 2-0-1 WCC) found the back of the net on their first opportunity in the overtime period.

Yousef Sami scored the game-winner for the Gaels in the 92nd minute. After Saint Mary's fired two shots - both saved by USF freshman keeper Brendan Roslund - the senior midfielder collected a rebound and fired the ball into the back of the net over a sprawling Dons defender on the goal line.

Saint Mary's held a 10-6 shot advantage and the Dons did not attempt a shot in the first half. The Gaels held a big 7-2 edge in corner kicks in the contest. Junior midfielder Justin Warren led the Dons with a pair of shots in the contest.

"It's a very disappointing loss," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "I was unhappy with our effort in the first half and thought it was very lackluster compared to how we played against Santa Clara Friday. We were better in the second half, but Saint Mary's didn't beat themselves and we couldn't score. We made a key mistake in overtime and Saint Mary's capitalized."

Roslund (3-4-0) suffered the loss for the Dons and made four saves. Doug Herrick picked up the shutout for the Gaels, his third, and made a save.

San Francisco opens a four-match homestand next week, beginning Friday, October 16, when No. 18 Portland visits the Hilltop. Match time against the Pilots is set for 7:30 PM at Negoesco Stadium, following the conclusion of USF women's soccer match against ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara at 5:00 PM.
