San Francisco Men's Soccer Falls 2-1 in Overtime Battle to San Diego

Oct. 17, 2008

Final Stats

(San Francisco) - USF men's soccer held a 20-10 shot advantage against San Diego Friday night in West Coast Conference action, but dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision in overtime at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (4-6-1, 2-2-0 WCC) could not capitalize on several good scoring opportunities against the league-leading Toreros (4-6-1, 4-0-0 WCC).

Junior forward Conor Chinn put USF in front with a spectacular highlight reel goal in the 13th minute. Chinn streaked down the far sideline, shook multiple defenders and then won a one-on-one battle versus San Diego goalkeeper Kelin Briones, rifling a shot to the far post. It was Chinn's fourth consecutive match with a scoring strike and the San Diego native has scored a goal in six of his last seven contests.

Brandon Kelley provided the equalizer for the Toreros in the 37th minute and sent the ball into an empty net from three yards. Kelley's goal came on USD's third shot of the half. San Francisco held a 12-6 shot advantage prior to intermission.

Once in the second half, the Dons continued to press the attack and outshot San Diego 8-3. Unfortunately for USF, the Toreros first attempt in overtime crossed the goal line as USD remained unbeaten in WCC play thanks to a game-winner from Andrew Feld in the 95th minute of the first overtime session.

Briones collected his fourth straight win in goal for San Diego and made seven saves on the night. Senior goalkeeper Eric Conner suffered the loss for the Dons and made three saves.

Chinn led the Dons with a match-high five shots, three on target, while junior midfielder Jonathan McMullen, sophomore forward Jonathan McMullen and freshman midfielder Victor Wennberg fired three apiece.

USF looks to bounce back when it closes its three-match homestand with a Sunday matinee against Loyola Marymount. Match time against the Lions is set for 2:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium.
