USF Men's Soccer Blanks Loyola Marymount 1-0 in WCC Play

Oct. 19, 2008

Final Stats

(San Francisco) - Junior midfielder Leon Williams scored his first career goal in highlight reel fashion from the top of the box, lifting San Francisco to a 1-0 shutout victory against Loyola Marymount in West Coast Conference action Sunday at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (4-7-1, 3-2-0 WCC) post their fourth shutout win of the season and defeat the Lions (4-4-5, 2-2-1 WCC) for the seventh consecutive time.

USF enjoyed an 11-6 shot advantage for the match, including a 7-2 edge in the first half. The Dons league-leading defensive unit had some scary moments late as LMU pressed the attack, but San Francisco lowered its team GAA to 0.97 for the season.

Williams broke open a scoreless contest in the 50th minute taking a feed from sophomore forward Bryan Burke and sent a missile into the upper left corner. The Junior College All-American recorded three shots on the afternoon for the Dons. It was the first assist of the season for Burke.

"I'm very proud of the team and the way it bounced back after an extremely tough overtime loss to San Diego," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "I was very pleased with how the team within 48 hours showed up and showed a lot of resilience and bounced back and played a tough 90 minutes against a very good LMU team. Now we need a good week of practice, because obviously next weekend Friday and Sunday against the Broncos is going to be a very tough challenge for us."

Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe (4-4-1) collected the shutout - his fourth of the season - and made good decisions in organizing the defense. Patrick Sampson suffered the loss for the Lions and made a pair of saves.

Chinn recorded a match-high five shots, two on goal. No LMU starter took a shot in the contest, while Brad Stisser and Paul Da Silva attempted two off the bench.

San Francisco returns to action when it takes on ancient Bay Area and WCC rival Santa Clara twice next weekend, beginning Friday, October 24 at Santa Clara. Match time against the Broncos is set for 7:00 PM at Buck Shaw Stadium.
