(Santa Clara, CA) - USF men's soccer battled Santa Clara for 110 minutes but neither team was able to find the back of the net in a hard fought West Coast Conference match on a balmy Friday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Dons (4-7-2, 3-2-1 WCC) got another outstanding performance from their defensive unit in snapping a four-match losing streak to the Broncos (3-6-5, 1-2-3 WCC). Santa Clara held a commanding 18-6 shot advantage and took eight corner kicks compared to three for USF. Time and again, the Dons showed their defensive mettle and turned away the Broncos. With the deadlock, San Francisco secures its first result at Santa Clara since a 0-0 tie in 1994. "I'm very proud of the team," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "I thought for the first half and the overtime session we were the better team. The second half Santa Clara came out really strong and they put us under a lot of pressure. I thought Jeremy Coupe really came through for us. Overall, I thought it was a well-deserved tie. Now we have to prepare for another battle on Sunday." Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe collected his WCC-leading fifth shutout of the season. Coupe made five saves on the night. Santa Clara goalie Kevin Klasila also picked up a shutout and recorded three saves in 110 minutes. Junior midfielder Leon Williams recorded a team-high three shots for USF, while junior midfielder Jonathan Levy added a pair. Junior forward Conor Chinn attempted one shot for the Dons.
The Dons tackle Santa Clara for the second time in 48 hours when they host Santa Clara Sunday, October 26 at Negoesco Stadium. Match time against the Broncos is set for 7:00 PM. |
