USF Men's Soccer Drops 3-1 WCC Contest to No. 19 San Diego
Oct. 30, 2009
(San Francisco) - USF dropped a 3-1 West Coast Conference decision to league-leading No. 19 San Diego Friday night in the swirling fog at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (5-8-1, 2-5-0 WCC) simply could not contain the Toreros (11-4-0, 7-1-0 WCC) searching for their first league championship since the 2000 campaign.
San Diego struck first in the 37th minute on a goal by Sam Reeder, who was left unmarked on the far post on a free kick. The Toreros made it 2-0 in the 58th minute on Andrew Fuld's sixth strike of the season, placing a perfectly executed chip over the head of USF's backpedalling goalkeeper. USD led 3-0 in the 76th minute on a scoring volley from J.T. Howlan.
Junior midfielder Victor Cortez scored his first goal in the 78th minute to spoil the shutout. After back-to-back deflected shots by senior forward Conor Chinn and senior midfielder Jonathan Levi, Cortez punched in the final deflection at point blank range.
San Diego finished with a 19-16 shot advantage including a 8-3 edge in the opening half. The Toreros had 10 shots on frame, compared to seven for the Dons - all coming after the intermission.
"We played hard tonight," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "San Diego was clearly the better team tonight and you have to credit them. They are on a roll right now."
Freshman goalkeeper Brendan Roslund recorded a career-high seven saves for USF, while Kelin Briones stopped six shots for San Diego.
San Francisco concludes its four-match WCC homestand when it hosts Loyola Marymount Sunday. The matinee against the well-rested Lions, who were idle Friday, is set for a 2:00 PM start at Negoesco Stadium.
