(San Francisco) - USF converted on two of its 23 shots, but Gonzaga connected on three of its nine, sending San Francisco to a 3-2 double-overtime loss Sunday afternoon in West Coast Conference play at Negeosco Stadium. The Dons (6-8-2, 5-3-1 WCC) see their four-match unbeaten streak come to an end, while the Bulldogs (7-7-2, 4-4-1 WCC) salvage a split in the season series. San Francisco got on the board first in the 11th minute as Conor Chinn took a feed from sophomore forward Bryan Burke and sent it to the back of the net for his 10th goal of the season. Chinn is the first Don to reach double-digit goals since Aaron Chandler tallied 12 in his WCC Player of the Year campaign in 2004. Gonzaga answered with two scores in just over six minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Mitch Boland scored on a diving header beating USF senior goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe to the far post in the 28th minute. Tye Perdido scored the go-ahead goal in the 34th minute chipping a shot over Coupe from the top of the box. Trailing 2-1, Chinn connected on the equalizer in the 52nd minute off feeds from freshmen defenders Victor Wennberg and Jared Cruz. It is the fourth career multi-goal match for Chinn and his second consecutive after scoring twice in the Dons 3-0 blanking of Portland Friday. After a scoreless first overtime period, Nick Love scored his second goal of the weekend with a game-winner in the 103rd minute sending Gonzaga to its second consecutive league victory. "It's a disappointing loss, however the team did everything we asked them to do in the second half and in the overtime" USF head coach Erik Visser said. "We battled and created a ton of scoring opportunities. Gonzaga is a very cagy team. They are lethal with the opportunities they do generate. I give them credit, they converted on their chances."
San Francisco held a dominating 23-9 shot advantage, including a 14-3 edge in the second half. Junior midfielder Jonathan Levi recorded a match-high five shots, four on frame, while Chinn added four, three on target. Seven Dons recorded at least two shots. Scott Barnum collected the win in goal for the Bulldogs and made 11 saves on a busy day between the pipes. Coupe suffered the loss for the Dons and made one save on the afternoon. USF closes out its four-game homestand Friday, November 7 against the Academy of Art in the 2008 regular season home finale. Match time against the Urban Knights is set for 5:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons will honor the senior class in a special pre-match ceremony. |
