(San Diego) - USF's Conor Chinn scored a game-winner in his third straight game in a 2-1 West Coast Conference triumph at San Diego Friday night at Torero Stadium. With the victory, the Dons (9-8-2, 7-3-1 WCC) secure no worse than a share of the 2008 WCC Championship at the expense of the Toreros (6-10-3, 6-5-0 WCC). It marks the third WCC title for San Francisco in the last five years and 12th overall. USF now has a league-leading 22 points on the season heading into its Sunday regular season finale at Loyola Marymount. A win or a tie would secure the title outright. Gonzaga enters its season finale at Saint Mary's with 19 points and can do no better than tie USF with a win in Moraga coupled with a LMU victory. Chinn continues his torrid pace and connected on his WCC-leading 14th goal of the season and has recorded a scoring strike in six straight contests and has eight goals (three game-winners during the span). Chinn now moves into a share of 11th place on the Dons single-season goals list and extends his own league record with his 11th goal in WCC matches. San Francisco got on the board first in the eighth minute courtesy of senior defender Jeff Russell, who recorded his first goal of the season off a corner kick by junior midfielder Leon Williams. That was all until San Diego was awarded a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, sent to the back of the net by Eddie Ahman to knot the score at 1-1. Chinn answered back in the 86th minute with the decisive tally off another brilliant feed from Williams. Senior Jeremy Coupe collected the win in goal for the Dons, who improved to an impressive 4-0-1 on the road during WCC play.
USF finishes the 2009 season in Los Angeles, taking on host Loyola Marymount on Sunday at Sullivan Field. Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM. |
