Final Stats

(Berkeley, CA) - USF men's soccer had several tantalizing scoring opportunities, but simply could not convert and dropped a 3-0 decision to Bay Area rival No. 9 Cal in the opening round of the 2008 College Cup Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Dons (9-10-2) controlled the first 20 minutes of the contest, but the Golden Bears (11-3-5) seized control from there and never relinquished it.

"When you face a team of Cal's quality, you have to capitalize on your opportunities and we were unable to do that today," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "I'm extremely proud of this group. No one thought we would make it as far as we did and that is a testament to the quality, commitment and dedication of everyone on this team. We had two or three excellent scoring opportunities against a team that does not allow many. I wish Cal nothing but the best as they take on Santa Barbara."

USF took the first four shots of the contest, but from there Cal held a 12-4 advantage. Freshman defender Victor Wennberg recorded a team-high three shots on goal, while junior midfielder Jonathan Levi added two.

Cal All-American candidate Stefan Frei collected the shutout win and made one save for the Bears. Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe made four saves in his collegiate curtain call and fellow senior Eric Conner also saw action in his final contest in the Green and Gold.

Senior defenders Jeff Russell, who captured All-West Coast Conference First Team honors this season, Kyle Schlumpf, who played an role in two USF WCC Championship teams and Bryan VanCura all saw action in their USF career finales.

Cal broke the scoreless tie in the 34th minute as Chris Deal volleyed a rebound into the back of the net and Demitrius Omphroy added another strike less than five minutes later. The Bears collected its final tally in the 85th minute as Andrew Wiedeman capped the Cal scoring.
