(San Francisco) - Junior forward Conor Chinn (San Diego) capped a record setting year with selection to the 2008 NSCAA All-Far West Region Second Team, as announced today by the organization. Chinn was curiously denied a spot on the first team despite ranking eighth among Division I leaders in goals (17) and goals per game (0.81). Chinn enjoyed a record setting year in leading San Francisco to the 2008 West Coast Conference Championship, and captured WCC Player of the Year in the process. The 5-11 junior striker shattered the conference record with 14 goals in WCC matches and 17 overall scoring strikes. As a team, the Dons tallied 25 goals with Chinn accounting for .680 of San Francisco's total. "It's very well deserved. Conor had a great year," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "Scoring 17 goals, including averaging one goal per match during WCC double round-robin play is a remarkable achievement. He's very much deserving of the honor. We very much look for him to build off this season and expect an outstanding senior campaign." Chinn was the third USF player in five seasons to capture league MVP honors, joining Aaron Chandler (2004) and Rob Valentino (2006). Chinn finished the 2008 regular season tied for second place on the Dons single-season goals list with 17, including six game-winners. Chinn shattered the single-season WCC record for goals and points (29) in league matches with 14, easily passing the previous standard of eight goals by San Diego's Guillermo Jara in 1995 and 19 points turned in by Portland's Jim Clarke in 1993.
With the selection, Chinn becomes the first Don to earn NSCAA regional honors since Chandler, Valentino and goalkeeper Geremy Uhl accomplished the feat in 2006. |
