Fresno State Knocks Off San Francisco 6-1

(Fresno) - USF took on their toughest opponent of the 2003 spring season, dropping a 6-1 decision against Fresno State. The victory improved the Bulldogs to 3-2 on the year, while USF dropped to 5-4. The Bulldogs, who moved up to No. 62 in the latest ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings, jumped to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles. Hector Almada and Sergiu Modoc at No. 1 helped pace Fresno State by defeating Joaquim Lien and Mason Fuller 8-5. In singles, the Bulldogs won four matches in straight sets. Greg Shearer won his team-leading fourth dual match by defeating Pablo Pires de Almeida at No. 3 6-1, 6-3. Also cruising to singles victories were Stefan Suta at No. 2, Alex Krohn at No. 5 and Marc Schaerer at No. 6. At No. 1, Almada struggled but pulled out a victory by winning 6-3, 3-6, (10-8) against Lien. A super-tiebreaker (first to 10 points wins) was played in lieu of a third set. Almada improved to 3-0 in dual matches on the year. USF returns to action when they host UC Irvine Saturday, Feb. 15. The Match against the Anteaters is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start at Olympic Club.
