Tu Advances To ITA Quarterfinals

(Berkeley) - Tommy Tu of the USF men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles main draw Saturday at the 2008 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional in Berkeley, Calif. The Dons also had two teams advanced into the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw during the second day of the event. Tu advanced out of the round of 32 with his second victory of the ITA's. Following a bye in the first round and a victory Friday in the Round of 64, Tu earned a straight set 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over California's Bo Katsarov to propel him into the quarterfinals. In the main draw of doubles play, USF advanced three teams to the round of 32, with two teams advancing to the quarterfinals. The duos of Rainer Nachbauer and Tu, Jacob Hartwig and Michael Carreno, as well as Alex Kotlyar and Peder Steen all advanced out of the round of 64 for the Dons. Nachbauer and Tu and Hartwig and Carreno then posted victories over opponents from Portland and Nevada to earn spots in the quarterfinals. Mitch Del Rosario posted a victory for San Francisco in the opening round of consolation play, taking Cal's Tommie Murphy in three sets (6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8)). In other consolation action, Jacob Hartwig and Toring Ching dropped their respective contests. Singles and doubles action will continue Sunday at Cal's campus in Berkeley.
