May 24, 2004

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced today that USF junior tennis player Pablo Pires de Almeida has been awarded the West Region Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for Sportsmanship and Leadership.

Pires de Almeida is automatically entered into the pool, along with the seven other regional winners, for the Rafael Osuna National Sportsmanship Award.

The junior communications major, a native of Fairfax, played the number one position for USF this season. He attended Drake High School.

"There is no doubt of the type of individual that Pablo is," said USF head coach Peter Bartlett. "He is a true leader and a great person and competitor. The award is absolutely deserved."
