Dons Men's Tennis Dominate the San Francisco Open
Sept. 8, 2004
(San Francisco) - USF men's tennis was well represented in the San Francisco Open over Labor Day weekend. The San Francisco Open is the second largest tournament in Northern California and considered one of the top tournaments in the Bay Area. The USF men's tennis team plays the event as a tune up for their upcoming college season.
For the first time in the history of the tournament a USF player was represented in the finals of each event played (open single, open doubles, and mixed doubles). USF also was well represented in the final weekend with a record four current players and two USF tennis alumni also in the advancing rounds (Alumni Jeff Williams and Polo Cowan).
One USF's top returning players Pablo Pires de Almeida had a great win over the #2 seed Jeff Greenwald and defeated the #7 seeded player and #3 seeded player before losing in the finals to Greg Lee. Pires de Almeida and Philip Riise-Hanssen (a new recruit for the Dons) advanced to the finals of the doubles competition but were defeated by Greg Lee and his partner Andrew Csordas.
USF sophomore Timo Kienle was defeated in the round of sixteen by the number five seed in a long three set battle, but had a nice victory over the sixteenth seed in the earlier round. USF sophomore doubles specialist William O'Shea won the mixed doubles championship with his partner Mio Fukashima in a long three set match over the #2 seeded team of Shibu Lal and Tarrin Dougery.
USF men's tennis opens tournament play at the West Coast Conference Challenge October 2 at Saint Mary's College in Moraga.
