USF Signs Top Local Tennis Star

University of San Francisco head tennis coach Peter Bartlett has signed top local star Thong Tu of Alameda, CA to a national letter of intent to play at the University of San Francisco next season.
Tu is currently the #1 player (standings) in the boys 18's for Northern California. Tu has been one of the top 3 ranked players in Northern California for most of his career. In his last season in boys 14's he was ranked #2 and in his last season Boy's 16's ranked #3 in NorCal.
"We're extremely excited to have Tommy come to USF," states Bartlett. "He is a great fit for our program. He is the type of player that we have had in mind to help us compete nationally and feel he will have a great career on the Hilltop."
Tu grew up training at the YTA (Youth Tennis Advantage) Laney College site in Oakland under Director Carl Jones. Tu has been invited to represent Northern California in zonal competition, intersectional play, as well as Junior Davis Cup. This season he will be the top player on his Alameda high school team. He is one of the only players from his high school to have won the team, singles, and doubles ACCAL titles capturing the elusive Triple Crown. He has earned Co-MVP honors on his team the last two seasons. This year in USTA Northern California tournaments he has won three tournaments reached the finals in two and the semis in three. He recently won the 2004 Blackhawk Championships in Danville without dropping a set.
"The most impressive thing about Tommy is his mental game. It's very rare to comment on a junior players mental composure but Tommy has a tremendous will and does not give his opponent any points mentally and especially at the college level this will prove to be a huge asset for our team and for his success individually."
The Dons' 2005 spring schedule gets on the way on Jan 21st vs. the University of Washington in Seattle.
