Senior guard Shay Rollins fell just a point short of her sixth 20-plus point game of the season Saturday as the USF Women's Basketball team dropped an 82-60 decision to Wyoming at Arena Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming. By dropping the game to the Cowgirls (8-5), the Dons finished the 2008-09 nonconference season with a 4-10 record and will open West Coast Conference play on Thursday.

Wyoming took a commanding 42-27 lead into halftime, after opening up on a 13-5 run to close out the first half. The Cowgirls took a 7-5 led at the 15:43 mark and never looked back, extending their lead to a half-high of 18 with 2:21 remaining. The Dons shot at a .423 rate in the opening half and were led by senior guard Shay Rollins with 11 points.

The Cowgirls continued to roll in the second half shooting at a .571 clip, including hitting 2-for-5 from beyond the arc. The in second stanza, the Dons posted a .286 shooting percentage, including a .429 rate from three-point territory.

Rollins finished the game with 19 points, marking the 20th consecutive double-digit scoring effort for the Alameda native. The guard also recorded a pair rebounds while dishing out a game-high three steals. Joining Rollins with double-digits was senior center Necolia Simmons, who added a dozen points and six rebounds for USF.

Junior Danesha Wright posted a game-high eight rebounds, marking a career high. The guard also added six points and five assists.

Freshman forward Katy Keating posted another solid outing off the bench for San Francisco, recording six points on two 3-pointers with two rebounds. Also off the bench for USF, senior guard Alexis Musante recorded three points and a rebound in eight minutes of action, while freshman guard Heidi Anton recorded five points, including a trey, to set a career high.

 

 

San Francisco will continue play Thursday as it opens 2009 West Coast Conference play at the reigning WCC Tournament Champion, San Diego. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. Following the contest with the Toreros, the Dons will return to the Bay Area to face area rival Saint Mary's on Saturday, January 10 with tip-off slated for 2 p.m.
