Jan. 10, 2010
(San Diego, Calif.) - San Francisco women's basketball played a hard fought battle, but fell short, dropping a 54-47 decision to San Diego Sunday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego. Rheina Ale highlighted three Dons who posted double-digit efforts.
With the loss, USF drops to 4-15 overall, 0-2 WCC, for the season, while the Toreros improve to 10-6, 2-0 in league action.
San Francisco and San Diego played an evenly matched first half, playing to a 23-23 halftime tie. The Dons went up 17-13 at 9:24, but the Toreros held USF scoreless over the next six minutes to outscore the Dons 6-0. San Francisco broke the streak at 2:57 with a jumper by Heidi Anton to knot the score 19-19. Whitney Daniels gave USF a 23-21 lead with twenty seconds remaining in the half, but a last second basket by USD tied the game back up at 23.
The second half was closely contested for the opening seven minutes, before a seven minute San Francisco scoring drought allowed San Diego to go on an 8-0 run. The Dons were unable to overcome the deficit, cutting the Toreros' lead to five, but were not capable of overtaking the USD surge.
Ale paced the Dons with 14 points, including nine in the first half. The effort marked the sophomore's 13 game this season, fourth straight, with 10-or more points and the 12th time she has been the top USF scorer during the 2009-10 campaign.
Vania Singleterry added 10 points for USF with five rebounds and an assist. The double-digit effort marked the sixth of the season and third straight for the sophomore guard.
Donnisha Taylor led the San Francisco defense with a game-high 11 rebounds - five offensive, six defensive - to mark her sixth double-digit rebounding effort of the season. Taylor also chipped in four points and a steal.
Anton added seven points, while Katy Keating and Mel Khlok each posted five, to bolster the USF bench, which accounted for 19 points in the game.
San Francisco dominated the battle of the boards, out rebounding San Diego 41-32.
San Diego was led by sophomore Dominique Conners, who scored 18 points with five steals and two assists. Morgan Woodrow and Sam Child added 16 and 12 points, respectively.
San Francisco will return to action Thursday as it opens the home slate of the 2010 West Coast Conference season hosting Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. Following the tilt with the Lions, the Dons will host the Waves of Pepperdine Saturday at 2 p.m.
