USF Falls At Gonzaga 59-47 In WCC Women's Play
Jan. 16, 2003 (Spokane) - Junior forward Carey Sauer scored a game-high 18 points but could not lead USF past a determined Gonzaga club that pulled out a 59-47 West Coast Conference victory against Thursday in the Kennel. San Francisco (6-10, 1-1 WCC) could not over come horrendous shooting and poor offensive decisions, converting on just .200 (6-30) from the field in the second half, while the Zags (10-8, 1-2 WCC) connected on .440 (22-50) for the game. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Lady Dons - all coming on the road - and lost to Gonzaga for the first time since the 2000 campaign. The night belonged to the Zags who seized their final lead at the 13:09 mark in the first half and never trailed from there. Another large loss for San Francisco was senior guard Lisa Whiteside, who exited the game in the first half with an Achilles strain. Freshman guard Joy Hollingsworth continued her strong rebound of late with a career-high 12 boards to go along with 13 points in her first career double-double. Nearly 200 friend and family members made the trip to see Newport native Sauer and the 2002 Washington State Player of the Year Hollingsworth. Gonzaga held a 41-37 rebound advantage, which helped offset 23 turnovers. The difference came behind the arc with the Bulldogs connecting on .375 (6-16) while USF was even colder from downtown, converting on an anemic .125 (2-16).
USF travels to the Rose City for a Saturday WCC contest against Portland, closing a program record eight-game road trip. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM at the Chiles Center.
