Feb. 3, 2007

Final Stats

(San Francisco) - USF women's basketball gave San Diego a run for its money, but could not cash in on multiple opportunities and dropped a 66-60 West Coast Conference decision Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (7-16, 1-7 WCC) drop their fifth straight, while the Toreros (18-4, 7-1 WCC) collect their first season series sweep of USF since the 2003 season.

Sophomore guard Shay Rollins led four USF players in double figure scoring with 15 points, while junior guard Nykia Peace added 12. Junior guard Dominique Carter chipped in 11 points, while freshman guard Randi Richardson scored a career-high 10 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists in 23 minutes. Freshman guard Heidi Heintz pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and added six points.

San Francisco connected on .410 (25-61) from the field, but the Toreros were better, connecting on .440 (22-50), despite converting on a chilly.348 (8-23) in the second half. San Diego made up for it at the free throw line, converting on .800 (20-25), .857 (12-14) after halftime. USF attempted only 11 at the charity stripe.

USF spotted USD a five-point lead in the early going, but fought back to take its only lead of the game at 14-12 on a 3-pointer by Rollins with 11:00 minutes remaining. The Dons extended it to a 16-12 advantage on the next possession on a Rollins lay-up, but San Diego bounced back. After breaking a 23-23 tie with 5:18 before recess, the Toreros would not trail again and the Dons never tied the contest.

After the intermission, San Diego edged ahead and managed to keep it at least a two possession game in the final 20 minutes. The Toreros took its biggest lead at 10, 66-56 in the final minute.

USF lost the battle of the boards 40-32 and San Diego scored 25 points on 16 Dons turnovers. Neither team shot well from 3-point range with USF managing a .250 (3-12) clip, while USD hit at a .250 (2-8) rate.

Sophomore forward Amber Sprague led all scores with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while junior guard Amanda Rego added 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists in 37 minutes. Sophomore guard Kelly Winther added 15 points for the Torero cause.

USF returns to action when it travels south for a Southern California road swing beginning Thursday, February 8 at Pepperdine. Tip-off against the Waves is set for 7:00 PM at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu.
