USF Women Drop 65-52 Decision at Loyola Marymount

(Los Angeles) - USF wrapped up it Southern California road swing with a 65-52 setback to Loyola Marymount Saturday in West Coast Conference women's basketball action at Gersten Pavilion. The Dons (8-17, 2-8 WCC) could not find the answers against the Lions (14-11, 6-5 WCC), who were playing on senior day and secured their eight straight win against USF.
Junior guard Dominique Carter scored a team-high 14 points on 7-of-12 from the field and pulled down six rebounds in 31 minutes. Sophomore guard Shay Rollins chipped in 10 points for San Francisco.
USF shot .382 (21-55) from the field, but managed a woeful .077 (1-13) from 3-point range. The Dons scored 26 points in each half. LMU converted on .383 (23-60) but held a convincing 41-33 rebound edge and dominated on the offensive glass 17-11.
San Francisco dug an early hole, trailing 16-8 with 10:55 remaining, but climbed back into it with a 14-4 run, taking a 22-20 lead with a jumper by freshman guard Randi Richardson with 3:53 left. Carter and Peace led the Dons with six points apiece in the first half. Neither team shot particularly well as USF hit at a .379 (11-29) rate, while LMU shot .367 (11-30). Both teams were ice cold from 3-point range, converting on a combined 1-for-14 from deep.
Carter's bucket at 9:11 in the first half gave her 1,160 career points good for sole possession of 10th place on the USF career scoring list. Carter passed Amy Touli (1989-93), who tallied 1,059 in her standout career on the Hilltop.
It was all LMU in the second half. The Lions never trailed and broke out of a 38-38 tie at 12:04 and rolled on a 27-14 run to send the Dons to their fourth consecutive season series loss, dating back to 2004.
USF returns to action Thursday, February 15 when it hosts longtime Bay Area and WCC rival Saint Mary's. Game time against the Gaels is set for 7:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.
