Box Score

(San Francisco) - USF defeated San Diego 64-63 in West Coast Conference women's action Saturday at War Memorial Gym in the season home finale. With the victory the Lady Dons (15-10, 7-5 WCC) finish the regular season with a sparkling 6-1 record at home during league contests and complete the sweep of the season series against the Toreros (12-13, 3-9 WCC).

In a game slowed by a combined 45 personal fouls and 54 free throws, neither team could establish much of a rhythm. San Diego opened up an eight-point lead at the 8:01 mark, 22-14 but USF whittled away and closed to within two points, 33-31 on a buzzer beating 3-pointer from senior guard Lindsey Huff.

In the second half, the lead changed hands eight times and the biggest lead of the half for either team was only four points. San Francisco repelled a late Torero run and a pair of free throws by junior guard Alicia Hernandez gave USF a 64-61 lead with 24 seconds remaining.

Huff, playing in the final home game of her storied career on the Hilltop, scored a team-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds in 31 minutes. Sophomore forward Carey Sauer added 15 points and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Sophomore center Leeane Jensen six points and pulled down a team-high nine boards.

San Diego got strong post play from sophomore center Marta Menuez, who scored 19 points and added seven rebounds, while junior forward Erin Malich scored 18. Senior forward Robyn Fortney also added 10 points for the Toreros.

USF returns to action when they travel to the Pacific Northwest for the final WCC games of the 2001-2002 regular season. The Lady Dons play Portland Thursday, Feb. 21 in the Chiles Center and then close out the campaign in Spokane at Gonzaga. Both games are scheduled for 7:00 PM tip-offs.
