Dons Fall To Portland

(San Francisco) - The University of San Francisco women's basketball team opened the final home stand of the 2010 regular season Thursday with a 80-52 loss to visiting Portland at War Memorial Gym. The Dons were paced by nine point efforts for Katy Keating and Heidi Anton.
With the loss, USF falls to 5-25 for the season, 1-12 against West Coast Conference opponents. Portland improved to 17-11, 6-7 with the victory.
San Francisco led just twice in the game, jumping out to a 4-2 lead to open the contest. Portland held the Dons to five points over the next eight minutes. During the span, the Pilots went on a 20-5 run and never looked back. Portland went up by as many as 18 in the opening half, taking a 41-23 lead into halftime. USF struggled from the field in the half, shooting just 30 percent, but hitting 3-of-7 baskets from beyond the three-point line.
The second half poised to be the same story as the Dons were unable to chip away at the Pilots lead. Portland went a 13-5 run in the opening five minutes to take a 24 advantage. The Pilots extended their lead to as many as 30 late in the half, thanks to 41.9 shooting percentage, including a 42.9 clip from three-point territory.
Keating and Anton both registered nine points with three boards for the Dons. Keating's nine points all came courtesy of three point baskets in the first half. The duo combined for 18 of USF's 27 bench points in the contest.
Sophomore Rheina Ale scored six points, marking the first time in 15 games that the guard failed to post double-digit scoring efforts. Vania Singleterry, Donnisha Taylor and Whitney Daniels also tallied six points for the Green and Gold.
Singleterry and Brittany Brumfield led San Francisco defensively with six rebounds each. Daniels, a freshman forward, added five boards.
Jessica Clemens and Alexis Gannis, who each recorded double-doubles, led Portland. Gannis finished with 11 points and a dozen rebounds, while Clemens scored 12 points with 10 boards. Laiken Dollente led all scorers with 17 points.
San Francisco will close out the regular season Saturday as they host league-leading and nationally ranked Gonzaga at 2 p.m. Prior to the tip against the No. 19/20 Bulldogs, USF will host Senior Day to honor Nnenna Okereke.
