Women's Basketball Closes Out Exhibition Play With 67-61 Victory

(San Francisco) - Shay Rollins and Necolia Simmons each recorded double digit points Sunday as the USF women's basketball team defeated Showtime Basketball 67-61 at War Memorial Gym. The Dons' victory came in the final game of exhibition prior to the start of the 2008-09 regular season, as USF finished exhibition play with a 2-0 record. Rollins led all scorers with 25 points, while Simmons recorded 10.

Both Rollins and Simmons posted double-doubles for the Dons. Rollins recorded 10 rebounds in addition to her 25 points, while also posting an assist and two steals. Rollins went hit 9-of-17 from the field, including going 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Simmons earned her second double dip in as many games thanks to her 10 points and 14 rebounds, 11 of which were defensive. The preseason All-West Coast Conference pick also dished out a pair of assists.

Junior transfer Danesha Wright and senior guard Alexis Musante each recorded nine points for the Dons. Musante tacked on a steal and one rebound, while Wright pulled down a trio of rebounds, dished out two assists and earned a pair of steals.

The Dons led Showtime 40-28 at halftime, before Showtime came out of the intermission to outscore USF 33-27 in the second stanza. San Francisco never relinquished its lead in the second half, extending its lead to a game-high 14 points at the 12:54 mark. Showtime then went on an 8-2 run over the next four minutes to narrow the Dons lead to five points. USF held a 17-9 advantage on second chance points in the contest, despite Showtime holding a 30-22 advantage in points in the paint.

Former Don Nickie Warren led Showtime with 15 points and six rebounds, while Serena Benevente added 13 points, five assists and four steals.

 

 

San Francisco will open the regular season a week from Saturday, on November 15, when it travels to face two-time defending national champion No. 6 Tennessee in Knoxville. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 PT.
