San Francisco Stunned By KSC Szekszard 86-76 In OT
Nov. 10, 2001 (San Francisco) - USF was outscored 13-3 in overtime as KSC Szekszard fought their way to their first victory of their American tour by a 86-76 margin in women's exhibition basketball action Saturday at War Memorial Gym. The Lady Dons finish the exhibition schedule with a split and now turn their focus towards UC Irvine as USF hosts the Anteaters Sat., Nov. 17 in the 2001-2002 regular season opener. San Francisco began the contest ice cold offensively, converting on just .269 (7-26) of their attempts from the floor in the first half. The Lady Dons could not find the handle on the basketball either, committing 30 turnovers on the game, 23 of them coming in the first half. USF shot better in the second frame, hitting on .452 (14-31), but made just one bucket in 12 attempts in overtime. USF took a 15-14 lead at 9:24 on a pair of free throws by freshman forward Leeane Jensen, but from there KSC seized control until the closing minutes of the regulation. KSC held a 35-26 lead at the half and led by as many as 15 in the second, 43-58 with 11:22 remaining before the Lady Dons mounted a serious challenge. Trailing 69-60 at 3:20, USF went on a 14-4 run to force overtime. Junior guard Alicia Hernandez led the way for USF with a game-high 18 points off the bench, while freshman forward Angela Gibson and freshman guard Toni Russell also chipped in 14 for the Lady Dons. Hernandez also paced USF with 10 rebounds.
USF opens the regular season against UC Irvine Nov.17. Game time is at 2:00 PM at War Memorial Gym.
