Dons Earn 49-36 Exhibition Win Over Sonoma State

(San Francisco) - The USF women's basketball team closed out the 2009-10 exhibition season Wednesday with a 49-36 victory over Sonoma State at War Memorial Gym. The Dons finished the preseason with a 1-1 record and will open the regular season Tuesday at UC Davis.
San Francisco took the lead at the 9:09 mark in the first half and never relinquished the lead. The Dons held the Seawolves to five points in the remainder of the half, going on a 14-5 run to take a 22-15 lead at halftime.
During the opening half, USF took advantage of 16 costly Sonoma State turnovers that accounted for 14 points. The Dons also scored 10 in the paint and 12 from players off the bench.
USF held Sonoma State scoreless in the second stanza until the 15:15 mark and held the Seawolves to just six points in the opening 10 minutes of the half. The Dons took the largest lead of the night, 14 points, at 7:45 thanks to a lay-up by sophomore Rheina Ale to bring the score to 39-25.
Fouls proved to be costly for the Seawolves in the second half, as USF scored 10 points at the charity line, including the final eight of the half for the Dons. For the game, San Francisco shot 78.9 percent from the free throw line, going 15-for-19.
No Don scored in double-digits during the contest, but all 11 USF players that saw action posted points. San Francisco scoring was led by junior Donnisha Taylor with eight points, while Ale, Vania Singleterry and Mel Khlok each added six. Katy Keating, Ashley Boggs and Tawny Drexler all posted five points, with Heidi Anton, Brittany Brumfield, Whitney Daniels and Bailey Barbour adding a pair each.
Defensively, San Francisco was led by Drexler with a game-high nine rebounds, while also grabbing three steals. Ale led the Dons with five assists.
Sonoma State was led by Jaclyn Bisordi with six points and two steals. Christy Shreve pulled down five rebounds for the Seawolves.
San Francisco will open the 2009-10 regular season campaign Tuesday, November 17, at UC Davis. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Pavilion in Davis.
