Lady Dons Dispatch South Carolina State 72-46 in 2003-2004 Season Opener

(San Francisco) - Sophomore guard Joy Hollingsworth and senior center Mary Jane Krueger poster double-double nights as USF rolled past South Carolina State 72-46 in non-conference women's basketball action Friday night at War Memorial Gym in the 2003-2004 season opener for both teams. With the win, San Francisco (1-0) takes their first season opener since crushing UC Riverside 105-51 to kick off the 2000-2001 campaign. The Bulldogs (0-1) continue their West Coast road trip Sunday at Cal.

Hollingsworth scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in her third career double-double, including six off the offensive glass. Krueger finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds in just 22 minutes of action, tallying her 11th career double-dip. Senior forward Carey Sauer led the way offensively with a team-high 14 points.

Junior forward Angela Gibson came off the bench and tied a career-high with 11 rebounds and added seven points and a blocked shot in 18 minutes. Freshman guard Jen Katsuyama chipped in with six points and dished out a game-high eight assists for the Lady Dons.

Sophomore guard Latoya Dent scored a team-high 14 points for the Bulldogs, while senior guard Latasha Cook added 11.

San Francisco broke out of a 14-14 tie midway through the first half with a 21-5 scoring flurry to take a 35-19 lead at the half. USF led by as many as 30 in the second half. The Lady Dons defense held SCSU to just .250 (8-32) from the floor in the first half and the Bulldogs shot at a .266 (17-64) clip for the game. USF connected at a .421 (24-57) pace on the night.

USF travels to Palo Alto for a Tuesday Nov. 25 contest against #6 Stanford. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Maples Pavilion.
