USF Women's Basketball Falls to Delaware 71-47 in 2006 odwalla Classic Championship Game

Final Stats

(San Francisco) - Delaware exploded out of the gate, connecting on 19 field goals in the first half and sprinted past USF 71-47 in the championship game of the 2006 odwalla Classic Saturday night at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (2-4) shot the ball respectably well, but could not slow down the Blue Hens (4-1).

Junior guard Dominique Carter was the lone Don to reach double-figure scoring, finishing with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior forward Nickie Warren and sophomore guard Shay Rollins finished with nine apiece. San Francisco connected on 15-of-34 (.441) from the field but the field goals and attempts were the lowest this season.

Delaware led by as many as 26 points in the first half at 39-13 with 5:10 remaining and were never challenged, leading wire-to-wire. The Blue Hens steam-rolled No. 20 Kentucky, 86-70 last night in the first game of the tournament. Senior guard Tyresa Smith earned tournament MVP honors and scored a game-high 23 points to go along with eight rebounds. After a 28-point night against the Wildcats, Smith owns the tournament scoring record with 51 points surpassing Oaklands Nicole Piggott, who scored 48 in the 2004 event.

Senior forward Chrissy Fisher added six points and seven rebounds against the Dons to go along with a 22-point, eight-board night against Kentucky, en route to all-tournament honors.

USF opens a two-game road trip Wednesday, November 28 at Bay Area rival San Jose State. Tip-off against the Spartans is set for 7:00 PM at the Event Center.

ODWALLA CLASSIC CONSOLATION GAME RECAP

No. 20 Kentucky defeats Southern Illinois 78-59 - Junior guard Samantha Mahoney led five Kentucky players in double figure scoring with a team-high 17 points in a 78-59 win over Southern Illinois in the 2006 odwalla Classic Consolation game Saturday night at War Memorial Gym. The Wildcats shot .463 (31-67) from the field, .375 (6-16) from 3-point range and were able to earn the victory despite an early lead and a .500 (22-44) pace set by the Salukis.

Junior center Sarah Elliott earned the only double-double of the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats, while senior guard Nastassia Alicius added 11 points, going 5-of-9 from the field. Senior guard Jenny Pfeiffer and sophomore guard Carly Ormerod each contributed 10 points for Kentucky. Pfeiffer went 3-of-5 from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range, while Ormerod pulled down five rebounds.

Senior forward Carlai Moore went 10-of-13 from the field to score a game-high 27 points for the Salukis. Moore also added a team-high five rebounds. Junior guard Debbie Burris chipped in four rebounds and 18 points, going 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range for Southern Illinois.
