(Davis, Calif.) Despite hitting 11 threes, the USF women's basketball team dropped a 56-49 decision to UC Davis Tuesday night at The Pavilion in Davis, Calif. Junior guard Danesha Wright led the Dons (1-4 overall) with 19 points, including five 3-pointers, while senior guard Shay Rollins recorded five three's for 15 points against the Aggies (2-1 overall). Wright and Rollins, along with a trey by freshman guard Rheina Ale, accounted for 11 3-pointers. The Dons went 11-for-28 (.393) from beyond the arc, falling one short of the school record of 12 three's in a contest. USF have hit a dozen three's on two occasions, with the most recent coming on March 1, 2008 in an 81-75 victory at Pepperdine. The Aggies held the lead, throughout the first half, taking their largest lead of the half - nine points - into the locker room. UC Davis held USF scoreless over the final 9:39 of the opening half to hold a 29-20 halftime advantage. San Francisco opened the second half draining three straight 3-pointers to narrow UC Davis' lead to two, 31-29, at the 17:30 mark. The Dons took their first lead of the contest at 13:36 when a Rollins three put USF up 39-37. The Aggies led for the remainder of the contest, but the Dons put up a fight near the end, coming within three, 52-49, at 1:14. In addition to leading San Francisco with 19 points, Wright also pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds. In addition to Wright and Rollins, Ale and Necolia Simmons were the only USF players to score in the contest. Ale posted nine points, while Simmons added six. UC Davis was led by Kasey Riecks posted 12 points, pulling down seven rebounds, while Lauren Juric scored 11 with a team-high seven boards.
USF now returns home to host the odwalla Classic at War Memorial Gym. The three-team event opens Friday at 7 p.m. with a contest between Northern Colorado and Washington State. Saturday, the Dons will face the Bears at 7 p.m. and will wrap-up the three-day event Sunday at 2 p.m. hosting Washington State on the Hilltop. |
