Women's Basketball Edged by San Diego 48-44
San Diego (Feb. 5, 2000) - San Francisco traveled to San Diego in search of their first West Coast Conference road victory of the 1999-2000 campaign and will have to wait another couple of weeks. After scoring a season-low 11 points in the first half, USF committed costly turnovers down the stretch falling 48-44 in the USD Sports Center on February 5. It was not a thing of beauty as USF (10-11; 3-5 WCC) and USD (11-9; 4-4 WCC) combined for 55 turnovers and 37 personal fouls. Neither team shot well with the Lady Dons shooting .395 (15-38) but converted on just .250 (4-16) in the first half. USD took a 19-11 lead into halftime, but USF came out in the second and made it a ballgame, taking a 37-36 lead on a jumper by junior center Kim Whisler at the 8:21 mark. Torero senior guard Susie Erpelding converted a crucial 3-pointer with2:06 remaining to take the lead for good. USF only got off one shot in the remaining two minute and turned the ball over three times before the final horn sounded. No Lady Don scored in double-figures, but senior center Sarah Wanless scored nine and pulled down five rebounds and swatted three blocked shots for USF. The Lady Dons entered the game leading the nation in free throw percentage at .784 but faltered at the charity stripe converting on just .591 (13-22) for the evening.
USF returns to action at home when they host the USD Toreros in an instant
re-match at War Memorial Gym on Friday, Feb. 11.
