Carey Sauer and Lindsey Huff Earn All-West Coast Conference Honors
Feb. 25, 2002 Sophomore forward Carey Sauer and senior guard Lindsey Huff were named to the 2002 All-West Coast Conference Team as released by the league office today. In addition, the WCC coaches selected Toni Russell as the Freshman of the Year, becoming the fourth Lady Don to earn top frosh accolades.
Huff elevated her game as a senior and propelled USF to their best overall record and league finish since her arrival on the Hilltop five years ago. The Woodbury, MN native became the Lady Dons' all-time career 3-point leader (141) and eclipsed 1,000 career points (1,082) and needs just five points to pass former teammate Sarah Wanless (1995-2000) for 12th place on the all-time scoring chart. The 1997-98 WCC Freshman of the Year, ranks second on the team in overall (10.8) and league (12.2) scoring and converts on .419 (39-93) of her 3-point attempts.
Russell earns Freshman of the Year honors following an electrifying rookie season at USF. The San Francisco native started 18 games for the Lady Dons this season and sparked USF's defensive efforts, in addition to sealing several close games at the free throw line. Russell led USF in assists (3.0) steals (2.4) and rated third among league-leaders during in swipes. Leading the honorees were sisters Jerkisha and Jermisha Dosty of Saint Maryıs. Jerkisha, a two-time all-conference member, was also honored by the league as Player of the Year, just one year after her twin was bestowed the award. Jerkisha and Jermisha now become the only set of siblings to ever receive the Player of the Year honor in WCC basketball. This season Jerkisha led the league in scoring, averaging 18.0 points per game in all games and 20.7 points in conference only games. The senior forward also averaged a solid 8.5 rebounds per game. The Defender of the Year award went to Jermisha, who averaged 11.6 rebounds per game (in all contests) and an amazing 13.2 boards in league only games. The senior center also averaged 15.9 points per game and was the WCCıs best field goal shooter, connecting on over 56% of shots taken. Rounding out the individual awards, is San Franciscoıs Toni Russell, who earned Freshman of the Year honors. Russell, a guard, played in 27 games this season and led the Lady Dons in assists, averaging 3.00 per game. The San Francisco native also ranked third in conference play for the most steals, swiping 2.36 per game. After guiding his team to its second WCC regular season championship in three years, Pepperdine head coach Mark Trakh was tabbed Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches. The Wavesı 20-7 overall record marks the fifth straight season the program has reached 20-win mark, setting a school record.
