Dons Viking Voyage: Day One
May 24th, 2009
Hello America,
Today our team left for Europe for 10 days. We are going to be playing against teams from Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. We will play five games total, and the rest of the days we will sight-see around the countries.
Our team is looking forward to this trip. None of us have been to any of these countries before and we are all very excited. Before our trip, Coach Haave assigned each player a topic regarding Scandanavia and we had to present our topics before every practice, so we can learn something new about the different countries. My topic was Lutefisk. Lutefisk is a famous Scandinavian dish that is basically dried cod. It takes a long time to prepare it can be considered as "fish jerky".
We have been on a plane for about 13 hours total. We landed in our first stop, Sweden, at 7:30 in the morning, since we are now nine hours ahead of home. We are just about to take tour of Stockholm. Our guide, Neal, just pointed out that there is a Starbucks and a mall right next to our hotel! Well that's all for me, stay tuned for our next adventure.

As I write this, we are onboard our bus, taking the short trip form the airport into Stockholm proper and, just like back home, traffic is backed up. We can't check into our hotel until sometime this afternoon so we are on our way to take a sight seeing tour of the city before having the afternoon to wander around on our own. We are going to try to solider through the day without naps. It might be tough; I know quite a few of us pulled all-nighters in San Francisco Saturday night and maybe didn't sleep too well on our flights.
Well, that's it for now. There really isn't much that has gone on yet, despite hours upon hours on airplanes.
Check back tomorrow for more blogs and the first photo gallery of the trip. Continue to check back every day for daily photo galleries, blogs, games recaps and more.
I will leave you with a fun Swedish fact of the day - Sweden is 173, 732 square miles, which equates to the entire country being slightly larger than the State of California.
