USF Women Use Relentless Pressure To Down San Diego State
USF shook off a slow start and rode a full-court pressing defense to a 67-58 victory against the Aztecs of San Diego State Wednesday at War Memorial Gym. With the victory the Lady Dons improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Aztec who dressed eight players fall to 1-4 overall. Senior forward, Krista Knapp came off the USF bench and exploded for a season-high 15 points in 19 minutes, while sophomore guard Lindsey Huff and scored 14 and added four assists and four steals for the Lady Dons. USF, who committed 31 turnovers in their last outing at Illinois State, took much better care of the basketball tonight with 15 miscues. The Aztecs struggled with USF's zone press and turned the ball over 23 times. After trailing 14-2 with 15:26 left in the first half the Lady Dons fought back to take an eight points lead with 3:04 left in the half, 29-21 and did not surrender the lead for the remainder of the game. SDSU rallied late in the first and fought back to deadlock the game at 29 at the intermission. Sophomore guard, Melanie Turner chipped in 12 points off the bench for USF and junior center Kim Whisler pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Mary Apiafi led the way for the Aztecs with a game-high 16 points.
USF plays Bay Area rival, Cal Berkeley this Monday. Game time is 7:30 PM and
will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
