Lady Dons Fall to California in Close Contest
BERKELEY (December 6) - An off-balance jumper by Cal's Kenya Corley with two seconds remaining gave the Golden Bears a 60-58 lead against the University of San Francisco and Cal escaped with the win at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, CA Monday. The heartbreaking loss spoiled a remarkable offensive explosion by USF sophomore guard Lindsey Huff who torched the Cal defense for a career-high 26 points - 19 in the second half - on 11-18 from the floor, including 4-7 from beyond the 3-point arc. With the exception of Huff, USF struggled offensively but the Lady Dons turned up the intensity on the defensive end forcing Cal into a miserable 32.2 percent (19-59) shooting performance. Cal dominated the rebounding battle 46-31. USF trailed by five 26-21 at the half and then Huff carried the Lady Dons, scoring eight of USF's first nine points of the second period and 19 of the Lady Don's 37 second half points. After the Lady Dons tied the game at 29 with 15:52 remaining on a Huff jumper, the lead changed hands nine times the remainder of the half with neither team building a lead larger than four points. A Cal 3-pointer at 1:23 gave thee Golden Bears a 56-53 lead, but Huff answered with her fourth three of the game to tie the contest at 56 at the 1:05 mark. Cal answered and took a two point lead before USF senior forward, Sarah Wanless responded with a driving jumper to tie the game at with :21 remaining. USF did not get much assistance from the officials throughout the game - USF was whistled for 19 personal fouls and Cal attempted 28 free throws to USF's nine - and the final play of the game was little different as an apparent travel which led to an assist on the Golden Bear's game-winning shot was apparently missed.
Huff was the only Lady Don in double figures and added six assists, while
Wanless added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior center Kim
Whisler contributed nine points and six boards off the bench.
