Women's Basketball Unable to Find Target Against Cal, Falling 61-53
December 8, 2000
USF shot a season-low 33 percent from the floor and committed 20 turnovers as visiting Cal took a 61-53 victory in non-conference women's basketball action Friday, December 8 at War Memorial Gym. With the loss the Lady Dons fall to 3-2 on the season while the Bears collect their fourth consecutive win against USF and improve to 3-4 overall. Kenya Corley put on a clinic against USF for the second straight year and poured in a game-high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. Backcourt mate Courtney Johnson added 17 points and five boards for the Bears. USF's pressing defense forced a season-high 28 turnovers, but their cold shooting on the other end translated into just 19 points. Cal rebounded from poor shooting in the first half - .385 (10-26) and shot .522 (12-23) in the second frame. The Bears owned a commanding lead on the boards and outrebounded USF 45-33. A season after setting a program record for best free throw percentage, the Lady Dons struggled at the charity stripe converting on just .522 (12-23). San Francisco was led by senior center Kim Whisler, who scored a team-high 18 points and added seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Junior guard Lindsey Huff chipped in 14 points and dished out four assists for the Lady Dons. USF returns to action on Sunday when they host the Bobcats of Montana State. Game time is at 2:00 PM at War Memorial Gym. Notes: USF Head Coach Mary Hile-Nepfel attempts to record her 200th career victory against Montana State. Hile-Nepfel is the winningest coach in program history. |
