USF & San Jose State Set To Host 2004 Bay Area Classic

(San Francisco) - USF and San Jose State will serve as co-hosts for the 2005 Bay Area Classic. The popular event, now in its ninth year takes place at The Golf Club at Boulder Ridge in San Jose for the second straight year running from Feb. 21-22. Boulder Ridge, designed by world-renowned golf architect Brad Benz, is the newest private golf course in the Bay Area, and is the home course of LPGA player Christina Kim of San Jose and PGA player John Ellis. Champions Tour player and NBC golf analyst Roger Maltbie is a frequent player. The par-72 course will play at 6,095 yards for the event.

The 2005 edition of the Bay Area Classic boasts a solid field, highlighted by four teams ranked in the top-50 nationally, according to GolfWeek. UC Irvine enters the event at No. 36, while BYU rates No. 42. Tournament co-hosts San Francisco enters the event ranked No. 45, while San Jose State is No. 48. Fresno State's Laura Luethke is the top-ranked player in the field, rated No. 57.

Two-time champion Cal owns the tournament single round (284) and overall (582) records en route to the 2002 title (298, 284). Two-time medalist Kelli Kamimura owns the individual tournament low after shooting a six-under 138 (69, 69) for Washington in 2001. Kamimura also owns the single-round record after firing a five-under 67 in 1999.

Last season Washington captured its second team title with a 629 (312, 317) on a stormy course, while San Jose State's Ashley Gomes won medalist honors after firing a 152 (80, 72). San Francisco placed third last season for the second straight year, while San Jose State finished fifth.

In addition to co-host Dons and Spartans, the tournament field includes #42 BYU, Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Fresno State, Hawaii, Long Beach State, Mississippi, Notre Dame de Namur, Portland State, San Diego State, Santa Clara and #36 UC Irvine.

WHAT: A pre-season golf tournament featuring women's golf teams from 14 universities.

WHEN: Sunday Feb. 20 11:30 AM practice round (with members from The Golf Club at Boulder Ridge and Los Altos G&CC). Monday, Feb. 21, 8:30 AM - first round of competition. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 8:00 AM - second round of competition. Online access and golf carts are available to the media all three days.

Boulder Ridge features dramatic views of the Santa Clara Valley and the Santa Cruz mountains, some of the oldest trees in California, plus massive rock formations quarried in the 19th century and used to construct the first building at Stanford University and downtown San Jose. Giant boulders (including prehistoric rock art) preserved throughout the course were once inhabited by Native American Ohlone Indians. (www.boulderridgegolf.com).

From San Jose: Take Hwy 87 South Exit on Santa Teresa Blvd. continue straight. Turn right on Coleman Road. Turn left on Winfield Blvd. Follow Winfield Blvd. to end of road and into the course.

From San Francisco: take 280 south (38 miles) Exit onto Hwy 85 south (12 miles) Exit Almaden Expressway go south/right (1 mile) Turn left on Coleman Road (0.3 mi.) Right on Winfield Blvd (0.5 mi.) Follow Winfield Blvd. to end of road into the course.

From San Francisco: take 101 south (38 miles) Exit onto Hwy 87 south (12 miles). Exit on Santa Teresa Blvd. Turn right on Coleman Road. Turn left on Winfield Follow Winfield Blvd. to end of road into course.
