USF Women's Golf Qualifies for Fourth Consecutive NCAA Regional Berth
April 26, 2004
USF women's golf earned their fourth consecutive NCAA Regional Berth, earning the #11 seed in the West Regional held at Stanford Golf Course May 6-8. The Lady Dons made history in the process, becoming the first women's team in school history to qualify for NCAA competition in four straight seasons. USF women's basketball previously held the standard advancing to three straight NCAA berths from 1995-97.
San Francisco concluded the regular season ranked #34 by Golfweek, propelled by two-time medalist senior Kristi Larsen, ranked #71. Larsen, a 2004 West Coast Conference First Team selection, won the 2004 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic and the 2004 UC Irvine Anteater Invitational. Larsen also posted runner-up finishes at the 2003 Oregon State Classic, the 2003 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational and the 2004 WCC Championships.
As a team, the Lady Dons won the 2003 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic, hosted by Colorado State and captured the hardware at the 2004 UC Irvine Anteater Classic. In addition, USF posted runner-up finishes at the 2004 BYU Dixie Classic and the 2004 West Coast Conference Championships. San Francisco posted six top-five tournament finishes, eight top-10 showings and failed to crack the top-10 in just one of their 10 events.
Head coach Sara Range is pleased with the selection highlighting another successful season of golf on the Hilltop.
"I am so proud of this team and what they have accomplished. It is a wonderful achievement to qualify for four straight trips to the Regionals. I think it is a tribute to all the players who have competed here," Range said. "There is still more work to be done if we want to achieve our ultimate goal which is to qualify for our first trip to the NCAA Nationals. It will take a total team effort in a highly competitive region for this to happen, but if our team is focused we can and will succeed."
