USF Names Josh Cupp Head Women's Golf Coach
May 30, 2005
(San Francisco) - Josh Cupp, the first head coach in program history at American University, has been named head coach for the women's golf program at the University of San Francisco, Senior Associate Athletic Director Sandee Hill announced today. Cupp brings an impressive coaching, teaching and playing resume to a program fresh off its fifth consecutive NCAA Regional berth.
"I am excited to welcome Josh to the University of San Francisco women's golf program," Hill said. "He has a proven track record as a coach and I am confident he can guide our program to the next level."
Cupp is enthusiastic about the opportunity to work with a talented group of student-athletes.
"I want this team to play a more cerebral style of golf, focused more on course management. We will take a more detail oriented approach with a clearly defined practice regimen that will better prepare us for tournament situations. Another goal is to play one of the toughest schedules in the country. In order to reach the next level, we have to play the top teams in the nation. We will be more prepared for regional play so we can move on to the next level and be a perennial top-25 team."
While his goals for the program are clearly defined, success on the links will not detract from the pursuit of academic excellence, according to Cupp who believes discipline and focus are integral to success in both areas.
"Academics are exceptionally important, especially at a quality Jesuit institution like the University of San Francisco. It is imperative for players on this team to excel at the highest levels on course and in the classroom."
While at American, Cupp was responsible for all facets of directing the Eagles program which won the 2005 Lafayette Invitational and posted a pair of runner-up showings and five top-10 finishes this season. A respected instructor and teacher of the game, Cupp worked with the LPGA's Kris Lindstrom and Futures and Futures Tour member Shayne Wild on swing mechanics and course management skills.
In addition to his coaching background, Cupp served six years as the head professional -and instructor at the Rome Country Club.
Cupp owns an outstanding playing resume as a collegiate and professional player. The 1991 New York State Junior Champion, Cupp earned American Junior Golf Association Prep All-America honors in 1992, in a class including Tiger Woods. The 1995 Player of the Year on the North Atlantic Tour, Cupp earned four varsity letters at Old Dominion (1993-96), earning team MVP honors as a freshman and senior. Following his final campaign with the Monarchs, Cupp earned All-Colonial Athletic Association honors.
As a professional, Cupp competed on the Hooters Tour in 2000-01, finishing in the top-30 on the money list and served on the Titleist Professional Staff from 2000-02. Cupp competed in the B.C. Open, a regular PGA Tour stop.
