Oct. 30, 2004
USF women's golf prepares to play their final tournament of the 2004 fall season when they compete in the 2004 Las Vegas Founders Showdown, hosted by UNLV at the Anthem Country Club. The three day event featuring an elite national field will tee off with opening round action Monday, November 1 at 8:00 AM. The course will be par-72 and play at 6,194 yards.
Four top-25 teams are scheduled to compete, headlined by #3 Washington, #10 Missouri, #18 Stanford and #25 USC. BYU, Cal-Berkeley, Colorado State, Eastern Washington, Kent State, New Mexico State, San Diego State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UC Irvine and the host Rebels round out the tournament field.
San Francisco has turned in some outstanding results with an extremely young team this season in a lineup featuring at least three underclassmen. The Dons won the 2004 Ron Moore Intercollegiate, hosted by Denver and are coming off a fourth place showing at the 2004 San Diego State Aztec Invitational in their last event.
USF head coach Sara Range is excited about the opportunity for her team to compete in an elite tournament to close out the Fall season."We are really looking forward to playing in this tournament. There are some outstanding teams in this field and 14 teams are ranked in the top-50, so this will really challenge us to play our best golf," Range said.
Senior Mariko Shimozaki leads the Dons into battle this weekend. The Hawaii native posted a runner-up finish at the 2004 Ron Moore Intercollegiate in the best showing of her strong career on the Hilltop. Shimozaki was also the top finisher for the Dons at the Edean Ihlanfeldt and finished seventh at the SDSU Aztec. Junior Nikki Jacoby has also come on of late and has scored second for San Francisco in consecutive tournaments.
USF freshman Casey Gee will make her collegiate debut in the tournament playing at number five for the Dons this week and will join fellow freshmen Jessica Potter and Sydney Gee. Potter turned in third place showing in her first collegiate event at the 2004 Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Invitational.
