Defending Champion Cal In Command After First Round of 2003 Luna Bay Area Classic

VALLEJO - The fifth-ranked California women's golf team shot a sizzling 8-over-par 296 to take a 16-shot lead after the first round of the LUNA Bay Area Classic held at Hiddenbrooke Country Club in Vallejo Tuesday. The Bears' Sarah Huarte leads the individual competition after firing an ever-par 72, while Cal's Sophia Sheridan is in second place at 74, and Vikki Laing, Anna Temple and Claire Dury are all tied for third place at 75. San Francisco's Susie Laing shares a three-way tie for third with a first round score of 75. Washington is the closest competitor to the Bears in the 12-team field, but the Huskies are 16 strokes back at 312. USF is in third at 317, with UC Irvine in fourth at 318.
