USF Wins 2005 Bay Area Classic; San Jose State Second

(San Jose, CA) - USF stormed back from an eight shot deficit after the opening round to capture the 2005 Bay Area Classic Tuesday at The Golf Course at Boulder Ridge. The Dons surged past Fresno State who held the blustery opening round lead of 310 and held off tournament co-host San Jose State by one shot.
San Francisco shot a 625 (318, 307), while the Spartans fired a 626 (320, 306). Brigham Young finished in third place, finishing with 628 (322, 306), while Fresno State finished fourth with 629 (310, 319). UC Irvine (331, 305) and Hawaii (318, 318) rounded out the top five with a 636. The Anteaters' 305 in the second round was the lowest single round of the tournament.
It is the first time San Francisco has captured the team title in the tournament it has co-hosted for nine seasons.
USF senior Mariko Shimozaki won medalist honors for the first time in her career, shooting a 150 (77, 73) and was tied with Hawaii's Dale Gammie (76, 74). Shimozaki earned the medalist honors by on a scorecard playoff after shooting a two-under 34 on the back nine.
BYU's Rachel Newren (74, 77) and UC Irvine's Angela Won (82, 69) shared third place. Won's round of three-under 69 was the lowest round of the tournament and the only score in the red on the par-72 course playing at 6,095 yards.
