Lady Dons in 10th Place After Day One at San Jose State Spartan Invitational

(Salinas, CA) - On the strength of a 13-under par morning round team score, Pepperdine has an 18-shot lead entering the final round of the 2003 Spartan Invitational women's golf tournament at the Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas. Pepperdine, the nation's top-ranked team according to GolfStat, has a 36-hole total of 567 on the par 72, 5,938-yard Corral de Tierra Country Club course. The Waves had the best team score in each of the two rounds played posting a 275 in the morning round and a four-over 292 in the afternoon. UCLA is in second place at 585. Arizona State at 590, California at 597, and UNLV at 598 are the other teams in the 14-team field with a score below 600. Host San Jose State is ninth at 615, while San Francisco is one shot back in 10th place with a 616. Katherine Hull of Pepperdine, who set the course record for women with a 63 in the morning round, added a one-under par 71 to take the individual lead with a 10-under par 134. Hull, a senior and the number-one ranked NCAA Division I individual, had 11 birdies during her 36 holes of play. She holds a three-shot lead over her teammate, Lindsey Wright, who is second at 137. UC Irvine's Angela Won, who had a pair of 71's, is the only other player in the field under par at 142. Johnna Nealy of Oregon and Gina Umeck of UCLA are tied for fourth at even par 144. Senior Lyndsey Devenish was the top finisher for the Lady Dons with a 152 (72, 80), good for a share of 21st place. Fellow senior Scot Susie Laing is one stroke behind at 153 (77, 76) and shares 27th place. The 54-hole tournament concludes with 18 holes on March 5.
